Mosquito Life Cycle; Mosquitoes Use Standing Water to Breed & Thrive
Due to the lethal diseases, these little pests can transmit, they are actually the world’s deadliest animal. Females are the only bloodsuckers, needing the protein to reproduce. Males stick to flower nectar for their sustenance. When the females lay their eggs, they require standing water, a few inches of consistent stagnant water is all it takes. Mosquitoes stick to their watery nurseries for a time. Once eggs are laid, it only takes 24-48 hours for them to hatch into larvae. Larger larvae can actually be seen floating in the infested water. Pupal stage is next after the larvae mature for 7-10 days. Larvae and pupae cannot survive without water, if their watery nests evaporate before adulthood, they will often die. A few short days later, pupae become adults, where they will dry off their wings, look for food and mates to start the cycle over again. Females can lay up to 100 eggs at a time; and travel miles if necessary. Adults, if not killed by an annoyed host, can live 5-6 months!
